There is a steep hill which was not part of original Railway but they had to get across a busy Route 6 so they built a bridge to do it. It runs 2+ miles from just south of the intersection of NY 6 & 52 to just south of NY 6 & 312. Highly recommended. The only reason I did not give this trail 5 stars was because of lack of and condition of bathroom facilities. It's not that long. This is an Awesome trail which was very clean, wide and many, many friendly people on the trail either cycling, walking or running. There are forest areas, beautiful mountain streams, marshlands, swamps, and then Whaley Lake. Parking is free when staying at the hotel. The only way to get to the other side is back to Route 6 and back to Seminary Hill Road. Note: As of December 2023, the trail is fully complete except for a bridge on its southern end in Brewster; stairways on either side of the bridge are available for the detour. From Whaley Lake to Hopewell Junction, the trail is more secluded, passes over a couple of country roads and through rock cuts, and there are a few nice peeks through the trees and a view of the valley. Having previously ridden from Lake Tonetta to Whaley Lake, I was familiar with the basic trail..gradual uphill from Lake Tonetta to Whaley Lake, gradual downhill then from Whaley Lake to Hopewell Junction. About a half mile over the line to an overpass at Mill Plain Rd in Ridgefield CT. I ran this 48.8-mile route solo and unsupported in a time of 6:50:12. There is an unmarked road section leading to another flight of steps on East Main Street (bypassing an unusable trestle). There are mile markers but they are easy to miss and I wasn't quite sure what they were counting up or down towards as they did not start at 0. Just tried the trail for the first time doing the first 10 miles from Southeast Town Park. If you go around and stand on it, it goes parallel to a company that's moved and it goes through the neighborhood to across from the trailhead.If you look across the road, there are signs for a wildlife sanctuary. The road is asphalt mainly, not in ideal conditions in many places, but nothing overly concerning - I saw people on racing bikes with thin rims. There were a few short slushy sections and a head wind, and the trail's surprisingly hilly, but I got to Hopewell Junction in about two hours. travelling south from the trailhead in carmel/brewster is definitely a lot of climbing, more than most will want to handle if that's not your thing.
